Hand spun and woven scarf

Pete and Carol Leonard

I was inspired by the colours in a bird design by H S Platts, from the Archive.  In another life, I may have attempted a tapestry, harking back to a Guild Challenge, many years ago, when one member’s daughter remarked on her “funny-looking pigeon”. I spun and plyed the green wool on my top-whorl spindles; Carol did the same for the red on one of her wheels.  I wove the scarf on my rigid heddle loom.  I used a Fibonacci sequence for the red ends in my warp, with 1, 2, 3 and 5 ends in groups separated by larger numbers (17, in fact) of green ends.  I used similar proportions of green and red in my weft.

Materials

The green is from a wool top and the red/orange is merino
