Loom for Improvement

Abigail Boyes

I’ve woven a series of patterns with the warp and treadle patterns exactly as written. As the weft wasn’t specified, I have mirrored the banding from the warp.

Originally, I planned to include a clasped weft to mimic the diagrams from the book transitioning into colour, but after sampling, it felt too visually busy. Instead, this work celebrates the students’ process and my own learning journey, as their notes have guided me decades after they were written.

Inspiration

I was just starting to learn how to weave when I started this project. I gravitated to Herbert Stanley Platts student workbook filled with weaving patterns – they showed the process of learning, mistakes included.
