Philippa Pemberton
I wanted to produce something similar but with natural fabric and dye. My overall impression of the book was of single bright colour fabric with a black print on a white background. I am not very experienced in dyeing techniques so I spent a lot of time testing methods and dyes. I finally decided to use logwood and onion skins and aimed for white circles to print into using wooden circles and rubber bands – tie-dye style. Printing was done with oxidised logwood. I made the Lino-cut spinning wheel block myself and used a purchased rubber block for the moth.
Materials
Purchased silk scarves, Natural dyes – logwood, onion skins
Inspiration
I was inspired by the bright colours and hand printed appearance of all the fabric samples in a book from America dating from the 1950’s. The fabrics were almost all man-made fabric (viscose) and dyed with chemical dyes. Some were by known artists, Dali was one.
