Anne M Bardsley
What was this fabric created for?
Suggestions have included:
– A bottom edging to give weight/drape to long skirts.
– A furbelow. Similar to the first idea, a decorative edging or piece of fabric, however not usually fur fabric, but I love the name.
– A muff.
So I have woven three pieces of cloth reflecting the suggestions , using some yarns that are also a mystery in their composition and potential uses.
The weave structures are variations of corduroy weaves and plain weave, using 4 and 8 shaft looms. There is also a nod here to the amazing burlers and menders , whose skilled work and dedication I truly admire.
Materials
Warps are unknown old yarns from a retired weaver’s stash which dated to around 1940.
Weft yarns are as warp yarns and using bamboo yarns for pattern areas.
Inspiration
My inspiration was taken from the Denholme velvet 1857 sample book
